His face all red - A creepy comic, which rattenmaus showed me. It's awesome, even if I am also more the 'I want to know what is the solution!' kind of person. Here is the blog of the artist and here is her livejournal.

Not new anymore, but interesting anyway: Some guy posts the first issue of a scanned/pirated comic on 4chan to recommend it, author sees it, goes there to comment and decides to post the other 4 issues as well for free to download ... what happens? Sales skyrocket! The blog of the comic, stats showing the sales, part of the archived threat on 4chan, the comic in color/BW for free download.

Seltene Erden - Habe ich in letzter Zeit öfter mal drüber gehört/gelesen/mit anderen gesprochen.
"Sie heißen "seltene Erden" und sind für Zukunftstechnologien unentbehrlich. China weiß das und verringert seine Exporte. Der Aufschrei in den Industrieländern ist groß: Droht nach der Finanzkrise nun eine Rohstoffkrise?"

Die Legende vom nachhaltigen Wachstum - Ganz unbedingt lesen! Sehr wichtiges/spannendes/interessantes Thema, durchaus auch in kritischem Zusammenhang mit dem Artikel hier drüber.
"Würden wir eine Welt vermissen, in der man sich zwischen drei Dutzend Fernsehprogrammen, Internet, DVD, Kino und anderen Zerstreuungen glaubt entscheiden zu müssen und in der Spaß zum Freizeitstress wird?"

I've seen the Bubblegum Alley in California (the other one mentioned in the BoingBoing) article live - it's kind of fascinating. Slightly gross, that makes you not want to touch the walls, but not too bad. And it does look so incredibly colourful :P

Seltene Erden sind überhaupt nicht selten, sie kommen fast überall vor - aber nur in extrem niedrigen Konzentrationen, die Gewinnung ist extrem aufwendig und teuer.

China hat in den letzten 30 Jahren die Gewinnung seltener Erden perfektioniert und konnte zudem durch konsequentes Ignorieren von Umweltschäden die Preise dafür so extrem niedrig halten, daß alle sonstigen Anbieter aufgeben mußten. Das ist der einzige Grund für Chinas Monopol auf seltene Erden - niemand konnte mit chinesischen Preisen mithalten.

Nun dauert es etwa 10 Jahre, bis irgendwo auf der Welt eine Anlage für die Gewinnung seltener Erden in Betrieb gehen kann. Die Chinesen wissen das und nutzen die Gunst der Stunde - anstatt weiterhin nur die Rohstoffe zu liefern, wollen sie die seltenen Erden lieber direkt für hochwertige Industrieprodukte weiterverkaufen, die sie dann exportieren können.
