So, it snowed here and everything looks pretty and white. Unfortunatly I don't have the right shoes for that *and* my car bike is at the repair shop, as it has a flat tire :( Well, I'll get it back tomorrow, but still. Bleh, so annoying!

Another annoyance: I went to the Plasma Service to get myself checked and registered so I can donate blood plasma. It's possible to do this 38 times a year and every time you get 20 Euro, so that would have been a little more than the study fees for one semester = very useful. BUT - I'm not allowed to donate :( My veins are too thin, so it's not possible. Damn.

Totally unrelated: Right now one of our professors wrote something on the intranet, about a project together with a university in Nairobi. Sound pretty cool AND the students taking part are going to fly there for a week or four. How cool is that? I'd really like to take part, I just have to see if it works with my schedule. And if he would take me :) I guess there will be many people who want to take part.

In 2009, there will be a new Cultural Library project and destination - offered as an IEP at KISD (the famous International Exchange Projects). This project is supported by the Goethe Institut, Nairobi and our academic partner will be the renowned University of Nairobi (Department of Architecture). In a small group of 5-10 KISD students we will prepare a project topic and set up a communication platform with our partners in Nairobi. In April/May (dates to be announced soon) we will travel to Nairobi to have a one week workshop on the topic that has been defined by us before. We will have a project room that enables us to get in close touch with urban space, people and processes, suggestions and conflicts. This project is a challenge as we are defining what design can do in this environment (that we all do not know). We all have questions in mind, we are going to discuss them with our Kenian partners and we will find appropriate solutions - together and in cooperation. For 2 or 3 of the participating KISD students I am offering the chance to go to Nairobi one week before the workshop starts in order to get in personal touch with our Kenian partners, to investigate the topic and the location and to start a first research and observation phase. This small team can also stay 1-3 weeks longer in order to start working on a catalogue that will be published by KISD and the Goethe Institut in June. It is planned that some of the Kenian students come to Cologne in a next step (in order to finalize the exhibition and the catalogue). In June, we will present the results of the project here in Cologne at the RheinDesign festival 2009. As the Goethe Institut is really pushing this project, we will have a lot of PR. As you know, Cultural Library is a series of projects and this project is to be continued… As you see - some things are still to be defined (a typical open design briefing). As the project starts in April, I need a team of good, experienced and motivated students before April - so please eMail me if you are interested. The exact travel times will be announced in the next two weeks. Financial support for the trip and the stay in Nairobi are given by the Goethe Institut, further support can be given by the DAAD. So if you are lucky, you don´t need to pay too much for this unique experience…

Also, one of our professors had a round birthday and her husband (i'm not sure if they are married, at least they are a couple), who is also a professor at our school, wrote a book about her (including articles of many other people - all writing about her and her work) which is actually published. Thats somehow really cool/sweet and a nice present.

Time rushes by way to quickly.
Does 2009 plan to go by even faster than 2008 did?

why scary? thing is, i can donate blood, thats no problem. but the cannula (?) of the needle for blood plasma is quite huge (bigger than for normal blood donations), so it's very hard to get it into a thin vein.

not really "scary" I guess ... its just that the EMT's/paramedic's here use a rather large needle by default. It sucks having someone fish around for a vein, especially when ya need it. :)

Oh wow, this sounds so great and so exciting! I truly hope it works out because it seems like such a great, enriching opportunity. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed so that everything will work out for the best.

*hugs*

I went to Nairobi (and other bits of Kenya) years ago and have always wanted to go back someday but I haven't done it yet.

Can you participate in local psych experiments for occasional money? :)
