Regarding the new ebook reader from amazon...
The Future of Reading
(Yesterday in the tram I wondered if the solution to this would be the impossibility to copy ebooks... this would make them tradeable just like a normal book and you could lend it out and you could buy it 'used'... yes, I know there are probably 100 reasons against that and it's not possible and all that and was done with music and was bad, but for me music is something different. While you always could copy music (making mixtapes for friends etc.), copying a whole real book to give it to someone is rarely done. All this putting aside the fact that I love printed books and wouldn't want to miss them.)

E-books... somehow i don't like them...
probably because they would end up like cds now, overpriced and you can't even read them with every "reader".

I always prefer real, printed books. E-books are a neat little thing when it comes to out-of-print books. But if I have the choice, I prefer the print version. I find it much easier to read than an e-book. Imagine reading the Lord of the Rings entirely on the PC.. I doubt I could do that and have fun at the same time. For me, it's much harder to stay concentrated when reading on the PC.

There are a couple of problems with this gizmo. To start with, it's pretty much locked to a single content provider, so if someone wanted to read something published through, for example, Lulu, they're SOL. Plus? The buy-in cost is huge, and the cost of books for it is higher than your average paperback. I'm not buying an expensive gizmo so that I can pay more for books!

Ich wollte mich der Demo eigentlich auf halbem Wege anschließen, nur um dann erfahren zu müssen, daß sie schon vorbei war... die haben die Demo in der halben Zeit runtergelatscht, weil ihnen zu kalt war. Weicheier!

Ach ja, ich warte darauf, daß UMPCs billig werden und extra lange Akkulaufzeiten bekommen. Dann kann ich nämlich endlich meine PDFs gemütlich in der Bahn lesen UND nebenbei noch Musik hören oder was mir sonst noch so einfällt.

Ich schaue schon lange neidisch auf diese eBook Reader. Lieder sind die meisten noch zu teuer und der von amazon hätte für mich zu viele nachteile.

Die Vorteile sind offensichtlich: Papier sparen (umwelt und kosten) und der Reader ist leichter als mehrere Bücher.

Ich denke gar nicht so sehr daran, ganze Romane dort zu lesen. Aber Fachbücher fände ich sehr gut. Ein durchschnittliches IT buch hat 1000 seiten und ist schwer, das nimmt man nicht mit in die U-Bahn. Vor allem braucht man aus seiner Sammlung meist nur ein paar Kapitel. Wenn ich z.B. weiß dass ich am Nachmittag aus dem einen Buch was in Kapitel x und aus dem anderen aus Kapitel y und z gebrauchen könnte, würde ich die Bücher niemals mit mir rumschleppen, aber in elektronischer form schon. Natürlich wäre gerade für sowas die Volltextsuche was ganz besonders tolles.
Im übrigen, kann man viele (gerade Fachbücher) heute genauso illegal (aber auch legal) im Internet bekommen wie Musik. Gerade bei IT Literatur ist die Qualität perfekt (keine Scans, sondern wohl zum Teil die Original PDFs die zum Druck gingen).

Heute drucke ich mir schon viel Zeug aus, um es unterwegs (in der Bahn) oder auf dem Sofa oder später zu lesen. Das sind Blog-Eintäge, Websites, Emails und mehrseitige Dokumente mit denen ich zu tun hab. Auch selbst geschriebene Texte lese ich lieber auf Papier korrektur als an einem Bildschirm. Auch dafür wäre so ein reader toll (die haben eben keinen LCD Bildschirm, sondern etwas Papier ähnliches). Auch RSS feeds komplett darauf zu abonieren wäre ein traum. (Feeds kann das Amazon ding wohl gegen gebühr von 99 cent pro feed pro monat; selbst gedrucktes aber nicht :-( )

Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass es noch etwas dauert, aber die dinger werden in der einen oder anderen Form kommen werden. Sie werden auf gewisse "Benutzergruppen" den Einfluss haben, wie der iPod auf die ganze Welt hatte ;-)
