Interesting, are Christmas trees not common in Germany? From what I've read the tradition in the US came from Germany actually.

Well, they are common ;) But I never decorated one myself, for some reason... my mother always did it, as long as we had one. In the last years she sometimes decided not to buy a treee, because only every third year christmas is celebrated in our house. The other two times we are at one of my uncles. This time she said she wanted no tree (too expensive), even if the party was here. I complained and said she can't do that when christmas is in our flat :) So she bought this small tree and said then I should decorate it :)

Btw: I'm very happy your situation finally got better!

ich hab solang ich bei meinen eltern gewohnt hab immer den baum aufgeputzt (seit ich 15 oder so war). das war immer eine schön meditative sache - hat auch immer urlang gedauert da die bäume immer so etwa 2 m hoch warn!
