I have a slightly distorted view of this - having got over the feeling when I was 15 or so.
I remember an episode of Blake's Seven (British Science Fiction tv) where something like an entire planet was being fed to a monster brain - or rather it kept on eating the brains and adding their capacity to its own.
OK - that was rather pointless - but it made me think about how massively powerful was everyones ability for thought. No matter what I did I was going to be a small part of that.
